University Jobs-Never Leaving College!
One of the most obvious choices if you are interested in working in a university job is
simply to apply for jobs while you are still obtaining your degree at the university you are
already attending. Many colleges and universities offer students first choice anytime they
have jobs open, which would definitely be to your advantage if you were seeking this
type of career path. You could be a student at a local college or university, and have a job
opening right under your nose, and never even know about it. It is to the school’s
advantage to hire you, since due to your lack of experience, they can get you for a lesser
dollar amount, than they could the applicant who has ten years already built up in a
related field.
If you are currently a student, and are interested in obtaining a job at your school, there
are a few different ways to go about it. Talk with your advisor, or counselor, and let them
know that you are interested in becoming a campus employee. Talk yourself up, just like
you would at a traditional job interview. Let them know what kind of job skills and
knowledge you have, and see if they have any jobs open that might work well for you.
You never know, your counselor may even have a position open in their office!
If you don’t seem to have any luck with your counselor or advisor, take the time to talk
with your instructors. Instructors always need help, since they usually are so bogged
down all the time. Few teachers actually advertise that they need help, but are more than
happy to accept it if it comes along. Sure, you may not get rich with this particular job,
but it could give you good experience on your resume, and some extra cash while you are
earning your degree. It could even open up the door to more lucrative positions within the
school after you graduate. If nothing else, your instructor might be willing to write out a
letter of recommendation on your behalf, or to serve as a reference for you on your
resume, which could help you obtain other positions with the school.
In most cases, colleges offer some sort of job placement services to their students. You
could always inquire about open positions there. Let the staff know what types of jobs
you might be interested in, and they may be able to find a good placement for you, one
that you hadn’t even thought of!
If you already spent a vast amount of time on campus anyway as a student, why not work
there as well? You won’t have to worry about extra commuting expenses, and you will
get good work experience that can boost you on your chosen career path! Jobs aren’t
always what we think they will be, but in some cases, can serve as a stepping stone to get
you where you want to be.
